A Bowden Cable-Control System relies on a flexible, sheathed steel inner push-pull wire to link a mechanical dashboard control lever or knob directly to a remote mechanism. In vintage wiper applications before full wiring harnesses took over, the Bowden cable operated a physical sliding mechanical switch plate on electric wiper frames or physically pulled open a valve on a vacuum-powered or power steering hydraulic-powered wiper motor to control fluid and pressure limits.
Cars & Trucks Utilizing Bowden Cable-Controlled Wiper Switches
These platforms utilize standard steel transmission rods or linkage pivots, but use a physical mechanical dashboard Bowden push-pull cable to physically toggle the remote wiper assembly mechanism.
General Motors (Vintage Bowden Applications)
- 1953–1956 Chevrolet Passenger Cars: Mid-tier models (including the Bel Air, 150, and 210 configurations) featured dashboard rotary dials hooked to a Bowden cable running through the firewall to mechanical sliding terminal contacts.
- 1950–1954 Buick Series 40 / 50 / 70: Classic Super and Roadmaster platforms used an under-dash Buick Windshield Wiper Control Cable Assembly that pulled a slider plate to actuate the Trico vacuum valve housing.
- 1954–1956 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight / Ninety-Eight: Utilized a steel Bowden layout hooked directly from the instrument cluster bezel to firewall-mounted accessory brackets.
Ford Motor Company
- 1959–1960 Ford Passenger Cars: The Galaxie, Fairlane 500, Custom 300, and Ranchero platforms utilized a dashboard slide knob that controlled a Bowden Cable directly into the Cardone 40-1096 Electric Motor terminal slider bracket.
- 1955–1957 Ford Thunderbird: Early two-seater sports car packages integrated tight mechanical slide switch lines under the dash cluster to bypass direct wiring routing.
- 1961–1965 Ford Thunderbird (Hydraulic Systems): Used a highly unique system where a Bowden control cable ran from the dashboard directly to a hydraulic valve block. This valve controlled the flow of pressurized hydraulic fluid coming off the power steering pump to drive the wiper assembly.
Classic Import Sports Cars & Commercial Equipment
- 1954–1959 Porsche 356 Pre-A / 356A: Early European sports cars (including Speedster, Coupe, and Cabriolet lines) famously relied on specialized multi-length SWF Wiper Motors with Bowden Control Cables running straight to a dashboard pull-knob assembly.
